Premature Ejection, Volume 1

Some thoughts on Vol. 1 of Slee's 2005 Favorites (104 mb zip file):
  1. Queens of the Stone Age, "Little Sister": The rock-n-roll single of the year. Their live performance on SNL (with Will Ferrell on cowbell) was one of the year's musical highlights
  2. The New Pornographers, "The Bleeding Heart Show": Some people would have opted for "Spanish Techno ( Read more... )

Aw, shucks. I hope it doesn't disappoint! Vol. 2 is definitely the B-list, but still has some good stuff. 2005 was a really good year!

I miss the upbeat Neko songs, but the NPs album otherwise successfully grew on me. It's still my least favorite of the three by a long stretch.

Art Brut were my favorite "band" of the year. They're everything that rock-and-roll should be.

OMG, I love the Portatastic album. I'm totally give you an HJ for giving it a shout-out.

Less crude More thorough response later.

I graciously accept your virtual HJ. (So much more personal than an e-hug.)

I look forward to both your feedback and your own Best of Ought-Five list.

Upon further review, your list reads more like The Best Stuff I've Missed So Far, which means this post will be my guide for wrapping up my 2005 purchases.

BTW, do any girls like the Hold Steady?

I'd say "hoodrats" if I wasn't afraid people not in on the ref might be offended.

V.2 is a little more obscure (despite containing a White Stripes AND a Gorillaz song), so hopefully you'll find even more stuff to download buy.

Nice. I'll have to get one of these lists going. The NP and Evens songs you chose would also be my picks from those records.

Yeah, I'm really curious about your picks. I've been following your Listology page throughout the year, but am dying to know the specific tracks from each of your favorite albums.

I haven't updated that thing as meticulously as I'd like. I'm also still sort of behind in listening to things because of the move and my slothful nature. So is yours going to span 2 vols. or more than that?

It looks like it'll be two volumes. Like you, I've got a boatload of stuff to which I haven't sufficiently listened, so I don't have enough right now for a third mix.

Some of the Listology people are crazy with the updates. I can't even imagine how some of them find the time to keep up wit it.

Many excellent choices, Mr. Slee!! I'm downloading it right now -- I'm so excited!

I still think of your poll every time I hear The Infanta.

I'm glad someone else enjoyed that poll question, because it honestly still makes me titter with joy whenever I hear the song. :)

I hope it downloads okay. I had to use the annoying megaupload because yousendit was being all wonky. If there's any problem, PLEASE let me know and I'll try it again.

OMG! "Casimir Pulaski Day" and "Bleeding Heart Show" are both on my year-end mix, too! I'll have to make a disclaimer when I post mine to say that we made our selections independently of one another and that they're just the same because our taste is impeccable.

I love both those songs for the same reasons you do. And I'll get my list up soon, not that anyone but I cares. :D

I certainly agree that your taste is impeccable! Those two songs are incredibly deserving of accolades despite being slightly overshadowed by "bigger" songs ("Chicago" or "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." on the SS album, "Spanish Techno" or "Twin Cinema" on the NPs.)

Looking forward to your list!
