Shiny New Toys

May 26, 2009 15:48

So, around September time I bought an X-Box 360. I went into the store with the intention of buying a shiny new toy and was torn between the PS3, Wii and the 360. My heart wanted the Wii, my head wanted the 360 and ... possibly my lungs wanted the PS3. Some part of me wanted the familiar, as I've a PS2 and the PS of the PS3 would have been ( Read more... )

This is pretty much the conclusion that we came to. The Wii is a good party console, and has lots of fun mini-games that you and your friends can just pick up and play, but I don't think it's suited to the sort of game that swallows you up on a Friday afternoon and regurgitates you late Sunday night. The Xbox360 is the inverse. Just make sure you keep the receipt in a safe place. :p

Play Mass Effect, btw. :)

I read your review of that and it went onto my list right away. ;) Sadly, I need to be made of money and able to bend time to be able to do all the things I want to. :(

I've kept the receipt. I also took out some extra accidental damage cover which covers over heating, because of the rep for it basically setting itself alight and dancing naked around the room while it dies. :P

Ours had a total HD failure within a couple weeks of it coming home with us. :p At least it had the decency to fail early so we didn't lose too much data. Which reminds me - we still need to get a memory card to backup saved games...

Well, I've had mine for a few months now and it's been purring along nicely. No faults, one or two crashes, but nothing that I think was actually the console's fault. So, touch wood, we're getting along fine. ;)

We got the Wii because 1. it was the cheapest, and 2. it has the most Mario games on it. I wasn't really fussed about much else - Trauma doesn't really play videogames, and I've got a decent PC, a PSP and a DS for gaming on without taking over the living room. I know it doesn't get me everything, but I can cope with that - I don't have time to play every game I want to.

Really want to get a full band together, though - we've got enough Guitar Hero instruments, but only two wiimotes. As there's only usually two of us.

Yeah, the much-cheaper-ness of the Wii was very attractive. Very, very attractive. However, the FEAR won in the end. Fear!

Let's not forget that the Wii has far more BLUE LED's in it than the 360 does!

and i'm not an obsessive sucker for anything with blue led's in it. at all. oh no.

On the up side, you'll get to play Darwinia+ sometime soon(ish). The PC version works really well with a 360 pad as-is, and I don't know if they're going to be doing further work on the interface, but it's a great game anyway.

At the time I was unaware of the blue LEDs.... however, it wouldn't have been enough to get over the fear I had of being stuck with a console that had controls I hated. From my experience of games which treat the remote thing as a control pad I made the right choice. The kind of games I wanted my console for are not much fun when you're made to use one of those things. :(

Still, blue LEDs add a lot of sway to the argument, no doubt. :)
