at my first base they used to do this exercise, where the gov't hired people to try to get on base, without ID's or anything, and see how far they could get, they were able to get a fake id, stickers at a junk yard (we don't use them anymore though) and get on base, get peoples passwords, and basically get access to everything, they found all this deployment info in the trash, and flight information, take off times, etc.
So the line between civil liberties and national secruity gets more blurred and things that can happen like 9/11 occur but when is the call for national security a price to high to pay and we start living in fear of our own government. With the easy use of labeling anyone a terrorist the need to justify the accusation is thrown aside. A person like Kevin Mitnick, who is no saint by any means to the system but gets thrown under the tires for being curious. I want the country to be safe but when is rolling back privacy just to high a price and those who would harm the country succeed.
Does a terrorist attack upon American Soil threaten America?
Because terrorists have goals and an agenda, my personal belief is that the attacks upon the world trade center were trying to evoke change in american foreign and domestic policy (essentially to disrupt the american way of life and status quo.)
and in response we gave them what they wanted. We lowered our freedoms in trade for a false sense of security( our loss on that one.)
and we have entrenched ourselves in a conflict without defined borders or goals... To get them where they live is not really a goal that can be completed.
Just sucks that I wish we could suck it up and say, "Many people died on September 11th, and we need to learn from that, try and prevent that, but yet recognize that doesn't change us as Americans or end the American way of life as we know it... and part of being American is to preserve on your ideals and morals, even through trial and tribulation.
