A Little on Liberty..

A favourite argument I have with dogsolitude-v2 is on the subject of civil liberties, CCTV and ID cards. So, I think I ought to set out my stall.

I'm often on the recieving end of this quote.

Having lived in countries where forgetting to pick up a piece of plastic when you leave the house is an offense, I strongly resent the concept of ID cards. Currently, the underlying infrastructure is not in place to improve government efficiency by having them either. If the government wants to sort out it's systems, then it needs to start thinking about that properly and centralising them before it starts thinking of enforcing ID cards upon us.

Personally, I hope that -if forced- the entire idea leads to an epic poll-tax level of mass civil disobedience that ends the political career of those ministers who back it.

Yes, I believe my response was something like that, I'd have stood by it if I was capable of standing ;)

The problem I have is that I'm not sure exactly what the principle is that you oppose ID cards on. The line of absolute privacy has already been crossed, so I really don't see where the line in the sand is drawn.

Yeah, it's not just the Orwell side of things, it's also the Kafka Effect and The (Terry Gilliam's) Brazil Principle :o)
