Who cares if it's 4 real

Music, what is ‘real’ and what is not? The age old question, burnt into the memory of people my age by the image of Richie Edwards cutting 4-real into his arm whilst talking to Steve Lamaq. It’s a question that’s been bugging me over the last week, pushed to the fore of my mind after seeing some music documentaries, including Strummer: The Future ( Read more... )

The meaning of punk enchochada December 17 2008, 09:17:04 UTC
I spent a long time last year trying to explain to someone that the people who she lovingly called 'hippies' (because they went to festivals, had 'new age' traveller credentials and dreadlocks etc) were actually far more akin to punk, and by default the anarchist scene (contradiction in terms but you know what I mean). I think people of a certain age ( like me) will always seen punk first and foremost as a mindset, but there are many out there who will only ever think of safety pins and Sid Vicious...

And Hot Topic *sigh*

I'm totally with you on every word you've said here Stevie now that I too have grown out of the "nothing is any good if other people like it" stubbornness of my youth. Music is a career just like anything else and if an artist can make enough money to allow them to continue then why shriek "sellout!" just because they're on an advert or film soundtrack? Like you say, it's different if they're compromising their artistic integrity for the sake of a few bob (eg Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts Here" on a car advert) but I happened to think the Devendra Banhart Clover advert was quite a clever juxtaposition.

And nobody ever changed the world, or the music industry, by joining a Facebook group!

I've not a massive problem with Hot Topic, I mean surely it's a good way to get music out to the masses? I know mainly it does clothes, but is that a bad thing? I certainly know it would have helped me having not lived in a big city and sources to stuff I wanted to wear, being able to go to the mall and get some cool clothes would have been good. Not that at any point did I look cool ;o) But I think your point was seperate from that, my brain is just zooming about as normal.

Was unfortunate to read an article about Fall Out Boy last night and it was like listening to a random businessman, it seemed like it was all for the money and not for the music. What rot.

But FB could be a starting point, it's not going to get Mr Buckley to number one though ;o(

Yes, but people who only think punk was a fashion really didn't get the point did they? Hence me using Kristin Hersh as an example above. You could also say a lot of comic writers are punks as well, using the internet to get their products out there and not relying on original means.
