More terrible crashes in stage-9. Scary enough to read, I'm sort of glad I didn't have to see them. I'm really sorry to see Dave Zabriskie have to abandon. I hope he recovers quickly! At least that accident came honestly. The later crash caused by the journalists & their car is terrible. >.I guess I'm left with rooting for... ah, Christian Vande ( Read more... )

It was pretty horrible to watch. He ended up wrapped up in a barbed wire fence. Not cool, car.

I KNOW. And after Flecha & Hoogerland had worked hard all day to be in the front like that.

Why did they swerve! Brake if you see a tree! *shakes fist*

I am trying to imagine what it would be like to be competing in the Tour de France and then crash out because a car hit you.

I really have no concept ready in my brain for the awfulness of that scenario.

...Self-assessing that you probably need stitches and then biking another 36km to finish the day anyway is completely badass though. I'd be like, that's it, I'm just going to die here. In the fence.

Yeah, me too! These guys are tough cycling monsters. *impressive*

And really gracious gentlemen. "don't think anyone does this sort of thing on purpose..." *ah, Hoogerland*

I know the the Tour sometimes tries to hand-wave and say things like crashes are part of the sport--but, all the accidents make me quite sick-to-my-stomach. These guys are basically hurling their unprotected bodies through space and time on skinny wheels.

Sprints, the well-timed breaks, battle-of-the-wills and killing their legs in the mountains--that's enough excitement. Grr.

Ugh, that is really infuriating. They're lucky they didn't kill anyone. It's all good and well for them to feel guilty, but hopefully some sort of--I don't know--media rules, I guess, will come out of this. Or maybe not? Gah. And I know they didn't do it on purpose, but they weren't being as careful as they should have been. Because the media is unscrupulous. Everywhere, it seems. :(
