Aren't you Jewish? Wouldn't it be odd to be doing things for Christmas?

Re the back - have you tried yoga? I know it means finding time to actual do it, but it's really done wonders for me. Just lying on your back on the floor for 15 minutes with your legs up on the seat of a chair can help a lot with most back pain.

She gave me exercises to do once my back gets better. I suspect that some yoga would overlap some of the exercises, and would be good for other stretching/relaxation purposes. The idea of lying down with my feet up right now sounds either very good or very bad (the back is not reacting as I would expect these days). I think I will try it...

The reply about Jewish/Christmas is going to be too long, so in the next few days I will put up a post about it (probably locked). It is mostly a "history about me" post, which should answer that (and other) question. "My life is strange", is the summary.

seconded on the yoga.

good poses:
legs up the wall (lie on your back on floor, bum against the wall, walk feet up wall until legs are straight)

supported forward fold (lean bum against wall, feet a foot or two so away from wall. folding at waist, just relax your torso and arms towards your feet)

back pain is frequently helped by strengthening the core abdomen muscles. a good pose to do that is plank pose (you look lik eyou're going to drop into a pushup, but you wont) with some movement: body straight, toes curled under, arms extended directly under sholders and palms flat on ground. bend the right knee and try to bring and your nose together (it's not going to happen, but bring the knee as far forward as you can), then extend the leg straight out behind you. back to plank pose, do on the left side.

seated or reclined leg lifts will also target the abdomen

I have been told this (about the abdomen muscles) before. Unfortunately, the exercises usually get done for about 2 weeks after the pain, then...looks like I may have to develop a regimen that I stick to for knee and back exercises, perhaps covered by some yoga.

If my back can take it, I will try the legs against the wall...what I would most like is to be suspended such that there is no weight on my lower back (no legs?). Not sure how to really do it besides being in water, but I will try a couple of these to see if they work now. Definitely after the pain is gone...

Thanks.

With a bad back, it's better to have your legs on a chair (bent legs) than straight up the wall. I should see if I have the exercise sheet from my "yoga for people with terrible backs" class around somewhere.

Hmm. I always find that twists are wonderful for immediate pain relief, but your mileage may vary.

Ah, good point, I can graduate to walking on walls ;-)

I have tried to do some twisting, like where I cross my feet and then twist my body around (not sure how to explain it better)...a couple times, I felt some "cracking" in my back, mostly a little relief, but either nothing different or more pain when I finished. Not sure what's up with that. I automatically think of twisting as a way to stretch out my back, so I think that's probably a good instinct (at least at normal times).

Thanks for the thoughts. If you find the names of the exercises, I will bug ednoria to show them to me some time (hm, a reason to order the lo-cal chocolates -- to trade! Yeah, that's the ticket!).

DH really likes Scrubs. I haven't taken the time to watch, having enough other interesting things to watch ;-) Thanks, and **HUGS** back to you.

I like your taste in shows. Missed Newsradio in its entire first run, and caught it a few years ago on A&E and was instantly hooked. hmasing and I are allegedly watching my DVDs of the first season, though for some mysterious reason having to do with him owning a toy store he's been a bit busy of late.

I've seen every episode of Scrubs -- been watching it since the first episode and got immediately hooked.

Hope things get better. I hope you'll remember to be kind to yourself about diet/exercise if you slip while you're not feeling well. I have to keep reminding myself about this ("You bad girl, you," I say to myself, "you didn't walk 3 miles today and you haven't been to the gym all week..." and then my self steps in and says, "Okay, that was the 102 fever, duh, leave me alone" and I go back to normal. I made that up, though, I didn't have a 102 fever this week, knock wood. It was just an example of what I do to myself before my self reminds me to be kind to me ( ... )

Actually, my dr was more helpful than that, it was just the way she made the comment that was very...understated. Her suggestions are good, and I think what she meant was that she didn't think I had any of the other possible problems -- slipped disk or whatever other things there could be. This didn't occur to me until much later, of course. She actually seems like a reasonable doctor, although we haven't talked about anything with significant value to it.

I am trying to be good about not beating myself up about lack of exercise -- my problem is that instead of eating reasonably to go with the problem, I am continuing the bad habits I have re-picked up in the last 2-3 weeks. I keep saying it is stress from work -- I don't have time to deal with thinking about eating along with everything else, but it is avoidance and returning to a "coping mechanism" that doesn't really work.

Saying that and then understanding it enough to Not Do It are extremely different things....
