I worked in the English office one summer as the administrative asst (taking over Barbara's job when she went on break) and DFW was one of the few professors that was around. I never took a class from him either, but I'd see him around the office, and he was always really friendly.
Of course I was in total shock when I found out, but here's the really morbid thing: Howard Jackson (from Classics) was also one of the other profs that was around the office that summer. He was always really upbeat and always had his headphones on, listening to African drum beats. He put his headphones on me once so I could hear how catchy and peppy it was. Maybe you remember, but he shot his girlfriend and himself the next year.
Anyway, so I was just creeped out when I heard about DFW and realized that two of the people I worked with from that summer had committed suicide. I don't really know what it means.
