Well, I am now armed with a birding field guide! Not that I want to become an enthusiast myself, but I'm sick of seeing awesome birds and being unable to identify them. :P

Search for local Audubon groups--they often have birding lists for your area! A search for your county + Audubon on Google may turn something up.
The Nat Geo guide is great, as it shows a lot of rarities that other guides don't cover, but I'm devoted to my Sibley guide--it has more illustrations of plumage variations and so on.
That does sound like a Red-shouldered...the heavily barred wings are a pretty good giveaway. They tend to be pretty vocal: "Keeer keeer keeer keeer!"
I'll have to take a look at the Sibley guide next time I'm at the book store. And I'm pretty convinced that is what I saw, though I didn't hear anything. I think he was a little ticked at me that I kept following him through the trees. XD

That guide should have a list in the very back with boxes to check. ;)

I looked and I don't think it does... I'll have to look again.

No checklist in this one (unless I'm missing it), but I can print something off.
