Birding has got me all kinds of excited; I even have a birding icon now so watch for it if you are interested! :D
Question - What is something I can hang or place out on our balcony to attract/feed birds this winter?

Today on my way home from grocery shopping I saw a pair of Black Vultures flying overhead! That brings my list of birds I have ( Read more... )

You might be interested in adding birdchickblog to those you watch. She posts a couple of times a day usually, about birds and rabbits and bees and wild mushrooms. ;) Unfortunately she's not a southerner, but she does travel some to bird workshops and conventions, so you might see some more local stuff occassionally.

As for your balcony, maybe a small feeder? :D If you've any woods nearby maybe a suet feeder too, for woodpeckers; later you might add different types of seed feeders for different types of birds. Depends what you've got around.

Thanks, I think I will! There are woods right behind our apartment building (the Greenway), so I see lots of wildlife and plants whenever I go walking. :)

I'll look into those feeders! Thanks so much for your help; I have not heard from you in so long. I hope everything is well!

Black oil sunflower is what I prefer to put in seed feeders. A lot of low-cost mixed blends have a lot of millet and milo in them; few birds are actually interested in those seeds, and the milo especially tends to only be eaten by doves. Thanks for all the suggestions and information!

If I really get going on this I may just open a new lj for birding too. :)

I'm thinking that too (NA checklist). I can't find many good GA lists online. c_c

Awesome! I can't wait to get a feeder up now! Where is a good place to buy a feeder?

Wow, I was going to put my two cents in, but got blown away by the expert! I learned so much from reading the comments!

I do know that Arizona has a couple of bird specialty stores that would have all sorts of specific feeders and feed, as well as books etc, if the local Walmart just doesn't hold up.
