Good luck! It is hard but worth it.
I found that once I got started it became a whole lot easier and that finding physical activities you like doing for exercise helps a lot in creating a habit/need of exercising. I started with Dance Dance Revolution for the PS2; 15 min or so per session two to three times a week because it hurt too much to go further. Now I run/walk/work out/bike 5 or more times a week generally anywhere from 35min to an hour or more.
Also I lost weight faster when I combined exercise with a low-calorie diet (started 1790 progressed down over time to 1420 at its lowest). Benefit being you can eat whatever you want, you just have to watch how much you are eating. Also more incentive to exercise because you can eat more your fill of calories the more you burn off.
Keep in touch with your doctor though. You don't want to push things too far too fast. No easier way to burn yourself out than to hurt yourself.
