it has never been okay to copy anything, it just never happened in any traceable format on such a widespread basis. as much as i like being able to download whatever i want, i still recognize that this can only happen on an illegal basis. the eventual outcome of making copying free: the absence of most people wanting to create anything in the first place. it's naive to think that the majority of artists create their art just for the pleasure of another, and the only way for people to make any profit from their work is to sell it on physical media, or in the case of broadcast media, bundle it together with commercials and ads. the ability to copy, edit, and distribute, on however large or small a scale, negates the only ways those artists have of being paid for what they created. that's the whole point of the copyright laws, which have been around since long before computers made it possible to freely copy and distribute files on a widespread worldwide scale ( ... )
