I think it only makes sense to have someone swear on a holy text of their own adherence if such a ritual is to be undertaken.

Why would you care about swearing on another's holy writings? The point of swearing on a Bible is because people believe that no one would lie about such a thing. If you don't believe that the Bible is a holy writing, and other people do, it just means that you can lie without remorse.

Yeah, but do we want to give a politician the ability to do it TOTALLY guilt free? I mean, he doesn't even have to go to a confessional for lying now, since he didn't even swear on his holy book! :*D

If people should "swear on the book this country was founded upon" I can think of a thousand other, much better, ones than the bible.

Hell, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs qualifies as a better book in my opinion. Less people take it seriously.
