one of my exes is terrified of squirrels. i have little fear of animals, but the ones on michigan's campus who bulk up for winter and are pretty tame could eat scrawny texas squirrels for breakfast...so i can't say i blame him that much.
i saw an article on cnn a month or so ago about squirrels being an issue in mountain view, ca, the HQ of a certain moderately successful online search company.
with humans edging out the food chain, it's not surprising that those who benefit from our castoffs and used to be minor nuisances become more frightening as they are the only animals still visible in our daily lives.
btw, your tinted pic of amelie is super creepy, i like a lot.
