I am the most impractical grocery shopper in the history of ever. The thing is that I don't think in terms of meals, because I usually only eat one a day being too lazy to cook the full three. (I just eat snacks in lieu of breakfast/lunch/dinner.) So I blew like, twenty bucks on fruit alone yesterday; I don't regret it. Especially when I made

My biggest extravagances are fresh herbs (basil especially - need to build a greenhouse!), shiitake mushrooms, and old cheddar. Really sharp, crumbly old cheddar.
BTW, I know I owe you a letter - sorry! Much drama with the inlaws, thankfully over now.

I find that buying healthy snacks does so much for how I feel about myself, really. I've always been a fruit and veggies lover, but I'll eat fruit over veggies simply because it doesn't take as much prep work - so I can definitely see the use of the prepackaged sliced stuff. My grocery store is in the bad part of town (gang territory), but it has the freshest produce at ridiculously amazing prices. I went to a Superstore once, in the opposite direction, to see how it compared - it was hideous. The prices were overblown and the fruits&veggies were on the verge of going bad.
Because I have to take at least two buses to get to any given grocery store, my purchasing habits tend to be really limited by what I can comfortably carry, which means that the bigger food items are completely no-go's, which alters my overall diet drastically. It's strange how much of an impact all of these factors have on what we eat and how we eat it and why. ^_^

I don't think I've ever gone food shopping at a Wal-Mart. Granted, they're not that plentiful around where I live; I was trying to find a Wal-Mart for cheap household things, and discovered the closest one would require around an hour's worth of travel.
People have recommended the cabbing option to me before, and I've actually done that with a friend as well - for her groceries, not my own; the bus fares here are kind of ridiculous, so I might look into it. The thing is that I need fresh fruits and vegetables. I wilt without them. My mom indoctrinated me into the cult of freshly grown things from a young age, and I have suffered ever since.
For eating veggies - do try stir-fries. You can load up with veggie intake, and because stir-fries actually do more steaming than frying action, it's really healthy for you as well. Especially if you make your own sauce! ^_^

Oh, honey - I am so saddened by your book-buying woe. I am more than willing to buy and ship books your way. Solidarity for the bibliophiles! I know how much it can hurt, waiting to read an anticipated book. Here, my email: slob.child at gmail dot com - if you ever, EVER desperately need/want a book that would be freakishly expensive to order over the internet, then just let me know and I'll do my best to get it to you.

Seriously though, I'm gonna be in the UK in December, I can just about bear the wait another month (almost to the day. Gah!!) Currently I'm dying for the new Laurell K Hamilton, Terry Pratchett and Richard Morgan, and that's for starters. I keep telling my parents what a sacrifice I'm making, not ordering these online now :D But really, I will take you up on that offer at some point next year! Honestly, I'm beyond words at your generosity (of time and effort); I wish I could reciprocate somehow.
We should so set up a club: Bibliophiles of the world, unite!
