I finally got a pair of Vibram Fivefingers this week. It wasn't easy, as they are largely on backorder like, everywhere. But they are so comfy and absolutely perfect for outdoor training.
I think getting super-tough soles from going barefoot all the time is probably even better, but it's not practical/allowed in ordinary life, and this seems like a great workaround.
Ooh, those do look comfy! Probably couldn't use 'em, tho. I have to wear a support to keep me from pronating the right ankle so that I don't aggravate the (already aggravated) bursa in the knee. Trying not to live on cortisone shots. And I already do far more barefoot walking than I should.
Whee. I wonder how they compare to the "bear's toe shoes" (Kuhmaulschuh) of 16th-century Germany? They're among the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn--when the replica is properly sized for my foot, that is. Of course they also jar me a bit when I have to walk on modern paved roads. I guess that's one reason why people back then weren't in a hurry to pave roads that weren't going to be passed by more important carriages.
