Maybe because, however new you were to iai and naginata, you already had plenty of martial-arts grounding from judo? From what little experience I have in archery, aikido, and WMA, the absolute beginners do tend to reinforce some bad habits if they are left to practice too long without supervision, though of course most of them don't practice often enough to make this thing a real issue. So I can see the merits in both sides of the argument--new students shouldn't be discouraged to practice more in the first place, but they should also be strongly encouraged to build the habit of seeking frequent feedback from their instructors and more experienced students in order to detect and break the potential bad habits before they get too firmly entrenched.
