Right. So. I am shamelessly stealing my own idea from an old fandom, and you can't stop me.
Basically, the idea is this: A bunch of fans from around the world all send postcards to Martin Freeman to arrive at roughly the same time, with the same message, as a way of expressing how impressed we are with him and his acting and his face.
Yes, this is absolutely silly and unnecessary (descriptors which are the building blocks of fandom, IMO), but it's also just for fun. This is in no way meant to dismiss or detract from all the other amazing and talented people who work on Sherlock, both in front of and behind the camera. I am just... really digging on Martin Freeman's faaaaaace acting skills right now.
WHO?
This project is... on the internet, you guys. Anyone who enjoys Martin's work (specifically on Sherlock) is invited to play!
WHAT?
Your postcard(s) can be of anything you like, though please use common sense (i.e. no graphic sexual imagery, etc).
If you'd like to find a postcard that's representative of your state/region/country, or even make your own homemade postcard, that'd be nifty. (For homemade postcards,
here are some helpful guidelines.)
And you know, if you want to send multiple postcards, that's cool, too!
For the message, you should write or type the following:
Dear Mr. Freeman,
ALL THE BAFTAS, SIR.
ALL OF THEM.
Very sincerely yours,
[insert name here]
The wording in this case is a play on Martin's EPIC quote during his appearance on The Graham Norton Show: "Fuck you, I won a BAFTA."
And the "very sincerely yours" bit is a callback to Sherlock Holmes canon. &tears;
Obviously, I can't police what people actually write, but the point here is that the wording is uniform on all the postcards. Remember: this is not meant to be a traditional fan letter*, so please refrain from writing your phone number additional notes on the postcard.
* If you would like to send Martin a more traditional fan letter, outlining all the ways in which you think he's earned said BAFTAs or stolen your heart or whatever, you totally can! I am always in favor of complimenting the performers we enjoy. In fact, if you'd like to write loving letters to Benedict or Andrew or Moftiss or whoever, please do! Their addresses can all be found
here.
WHERE?
Postcards should be mailed to the following address:
Martin Freeman

UPDATED: I have changed the address I originally listed, based on the information available at
the official CAM site (thanks for the heads up,
x_varda_x). If anyone knows of a reason we should not use that address, let me know.
Please write clearly and be sure you've included the proper postage, which will obviously vary by location. According to the USPS, postcards sent from the US to the UK will cost $1.05. If anyone has postage for other locations, I welcome that information.

WHEN?
All postcards should be mailed the week of Jan 30th, 2012. I want to both give people enough time to see the project and/or spread the word and to procure their supplies... but I also want to capitalize on all our current Sherlock ~FEELS~.
There will be a bit of disparity in arrivals depending on one's country of origin, but if everyone mails them the same week, the window should be small.
And that's it! I'll post a reminder on the 30th, for those of you with memories like mine.
If you have any questions I haven't answered, please let me know.
And if you do decide to participate, please drop me a comment. I'd like to get a rough idea of how many postcards are being sent! \o/
