Lately, I've been hearing a *lot* about how much the Toyota Prius is SOOOOOO much greater than a regular economy car like the Civic or whatever else is out on the market these days

I'm a few years off from buying a new car, but these are things I've thought about as well. A new sub-compact sedan or hatchback will get good mileage, albeit not as great as a Prius. That said, a well-made (i.e. Japanese) vehicle will last a good 10-20 years with proper maintenance. We don't know yet if the Prius has that kind of lasting power-I'd like to think it would, but having to replace a $5k battery sounds like it would get old.
As far as environmentalism goes, it makes more sense to get a vehicle that will last a long time than one that will have to be replaced after less than 10 years. There's more to being 'green' than good gas mileage!
That works too. I step it up and use my bike... works like a charm. If you get a bike, don't EVER fall into the trap of letting those "hipster fags" tricking you into getting a fixie. I of course, enjoy not paying any un-needed hospital bills.
umm... reverse your numbers on the mpg for teh prius: 39 FWY/ 53 city. The brakes recharge the battery as you brake, which is far more ofter in city than on the fwy. Also, it's electric until 30mph, and the gas is idling, just recharging the battery.
But, yeah, the fuel efficiency vs. the cost ain't worth it, hence why I'm going for two wheels over four with my next vehicle.
