This is so unfair. as somebody wh has beenboth critical aout convention running and to be fair the focus of criticism when I have run conventions, I think this is a bit much. Especially not actually giving a reason for the ban or allowing you to discuss their problem with you.

I've never made it to an Octocon although I've always fancied attending.....not anymore

Wow, she says, suddenly imagining fist fights over the Dr Gull question or a carping comment about V's methods leading to angry insults about someone's family tree.

Having been on the "other" side for plan conning and seeing what a monumental mishmash gets made by people who are disorganised and able to devote only bits of time here and there, I'm amazed any con goes on.

I swear to god, if I actually even knew what I'm supposed to have done, I'd be substantially ahead of where I am now!

Did they mail a glove with the letter? At least a virtual one? Challenge you to insults at twenty paces? Then you'd have something.

Joking aside, what a turn that must have given you. Even as foolish as it seems, to have that kind of vitriol -- just odd.

I have to tell you, I'm being highly entertained by some of the stuff on Cheryl Morgan's blog:

I don't know you, but I've been reading your blog right along. Frankly, I don't think you've said anything all that inflammatory about Octocon. You're certainly not the only one who has said publicly that it's been a poorly run event.
I do think that you're entitled to know what dastardly remark you made that these persons are so offended and upset, but judging from the semi-literate email, I doubt you're going to find out from them.

Thanks very much, I really appreciate that. And, yes, I await clarification with semi-bated breath...

See, I'd be wanting a justification citing specific incidents. You're vocal, yes, but to bar you without citing incidents or giving you a specific reason seems a little over the top. Plus, with people already talking about this, it's not done them any favours. And even if you didn't say anything, others would talk. It's the most natural thing in the world to wonder where the people you haven't seen in a while are. Finding out they're barred is going to be a shock.

Thanks. I know I can be difficult, as you may know, but I don't think I was ever making up any of the stuff I found fault with.

To be brutally honest, I do the same with gaming cons. I don't know the sci-fi scene as well as the gaming scene so I don't comment, but I'll be vocal about gaming cons going wrong and have been in the past.

Freedom of speech anyone? This seems rather unfair and I hope someone picks this up.

I have a Groucho Marx quote in my head right now. This kind of Draconian behaviour has certainly put me off attending this convention.

Yes, I was certainly mindful of that particular Groucho quote!

After going back and reading the tagged entries, I think you were most generous and accommodating. I'd say sod them and save your cash for a better, less insidious convention :(

You are handling this rather well. Good on you sir!
