I've been under an extreme amount of stress for the past two weeks, mostly due to work, frustration with my continuing weight gain, money, and home ownership problems. For me, the appeal of fanfic is that I've already paid the overhead. I mostly read "official" fanfic, that is, licensed books and adaptations, but when I do, that is mostly the reason ( ... )

Very good point about the already established groundwork in fic. Even when writing a complete pirates-in-space AU, the author doesn't need to bother describing the characters or borrowed canon situations, because readers already know them. That cuts out quite a bit of of necessary exposition, and those words can instead be devoted to fun things like plot. C:

(I've tried to read Homestuck twice. I have since given up. It will forever remain a mystery to me, recognizable but unkown!)
