About the new Facebook layout: some very interesting tidbits

A lot of people are up in arms about the new Facebook home page layout, but I actually think it was a smart business move. The new default view is intended partly to address the ever-growing problem of information overload. Actually there is such a view... when you're looking at News Feed, the Live Feed is the alternate view.

I really think the News Feed was done to reduce reader fatigue and help people sift through mountains of information.

I've had no problems with friends disappearing, but I've seen it happen to 1 or 2 other people. Very strange, and I'm sure it's frustrating.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page. It'll appear in a slightly-shaded box, at the same level as the "Older Posts" link.

Be careful... as you scroll there, the older posts may keep loading automatically. If this happens, try pressing the "End" key on your keyboard instead.

Facebook is able to intelligently select the most relevant recent updates and bubble them up to the top for easy consumption.

Except that it isn't.

I think you're spot-on that that's what they want the system to do, and I agree that it's a savvy move, for all the reasons you list ( ... )

You make a good point.

I think I read that they use other people's "Likes" and comment count to calculate most interesting posts.

I wonder if they'll tune the algorithm so it gets smarter over time?

But yes, I see what you mean.
