OR reload and not hit it? Yeah, that's the one I chose.
I'm sure there was some instruction about it that I missed because I'm impatient and because my brother always goes to bed early. Right now his gf is visiting and I'm totally stressing because I want to plaaayyyy! And you did tell me that I could not fight the dragon at this time. I seriously

The landsmeet won't happen until after you get the support of the Elves, Dwarves, Mages and Humans. But I would suggest doing everything you can outside of Denerim before you do that.
Here is a thing I do when fighting dragons. I have lots of ranged people, and one person who can get in close and keep the dragon's attention. When you fight the dragon, fight it from the side. If that character has the most agro, the dragon will turn to face you. Then run around to the dragon's side again. You tend to spend the entire battle running circles around the dragon, and it can be considered a bit cheap, but fuck that it's a DRAGON. What ever works because ... DRAGON.

I can head back later, right? for the dragon I mean.
I remember someone explaining to me that I just have to drive in circles with the Mako around the Thresher Maw and shoot at the same time and I am terrible at aiming and moving. I exploited some thing where I ended up just far enough away where it was out but not pointed directly at me and eventually killed it... But that was only, like, one of the ones. I think I skipped the other one...

And I hate Thresher Maws. I only even kill the one you need to for the Cerberus questline, and I just run from all the others. If you're playing as an adapt you can freeze a thresher in status, and if you have the upgraded version of that you can do damage to it while it is frozen. I tried doing that when I took my adapt through ME1 and it did not end well.
Thresher Maws aren't fooling around.

I totally fucked up my first playthrough, started the Landsmeet, got well into it, and then was left with all these quests that I could no longer complete.
Dragon fight tips:
itches is totally right about bringing ranged characters to the party. I space them all out quite a distance from each other, so that if the dragon attacks one, the others aren't affected.
If you're a Rogue with daggers, backstab backstab backstab. Get those critical hits in. Make use of your poisons for extra damage.
Annnd if the dragon is hanging on by a thread, don't feel ashamed to put the entire party on Hold and take the killing blow for yourself. Slow-mo kill cam for a dragon is awesome. XD

ooh, slo-mo kill cam! Me want!
I have actually been getting the hang of the fighting more, well that and we've all leveled a bit so I don't have to constantly look after everyone at every second. I can kind of keep swinging around to each character and then also let them do their thing as well, since I can end up messing up their own tactics with my interference
But the dragon I was not all about just yet. Let me first try to get a Revenant without switching to casual, then maybe I can try the whole dragon thing.
