Breaking the habit

After only one quick peek at FB in the last 24 hours, I'm really feeling it. I knew but I didn't really know how much I was on the site. I catch myself going to check notifications every few minutes. I've closed the page and removed the shortcut so I don't open it on autopilot, because I'm always looking for that input. Every thought I have I want ( Read more... )

Yep. This place is *much* more suited to being profound. Maybe it's the people here. I always felt pretty safe here. I do not feel safe on Facebook. It's riddled with colleagues! And parents of my kids' friends! And yes I could set up filters but that just creates anxiety about drawing lines.. do I share things with this person? But then why not with that person? Whereas here is a bunch of people who've been putting their thoughts on the internet for decades, and somehow that in itself feels safer.
I like the analogy of FB being a loud club without the dancefloor. We need a dancefloor!

I also find the format here is more conducive to actual writing, rather than to dashing off a quick sentence. And there isn't the sense that you're farming for Likes.

No. A good comment thread is still pretty satisfying, but it's not something that compels you to check for notifications as often?

Plus, the comments are properly threaded! And it's not a tiny popup box, so you feel you have room! And you get to imbed HTML iffen you wants to!

LJ was designed to be less of a quick fix.

Yes, I'm already rambling on all over lj (and dreamwidth). Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing tbh.
