Found myself thinking about Australian film in the 90s. As you do. There was a massive surge of funding from somewhere into the Australian film industry at the time, and some fantastic films came out of it. But only a few have survived. Everyone remembers Priscilla, Muriel's Wedding, The Castle. And these are great films. I have them all on DVD. ( Read more... )

Yes, I think you're completely right. I hoard all my old media too because I've seen things disappear. Even more recent things that were experimental film on the internet. My main problem of course will be accessing old videos and cassettes and floppy discs and syquest cartridges and things... though yes, luckily dvds are still a thing, and also records.

I'm trying to think of my old favourites but I have a terrible memory and a room full of doom to crawl through. Even Dogs in Space as popular as it was (is?) is not around much anymore, and I have old recordings of animation from Eat Carpet that I'm sure would be difficult to find now, unless (hopefully) someone has digitized a collection of that program run.

The more choice you have the less you can dig through to find the things you want, curation is a useful thing.

I'm sure a lot of stuff has been pirated and is available somewhere. But there's little chance to stumble across new discoveries of old films anymore.

I watched The Sum of Us precisely because I tripped over it in an American DVD shop, and was feeling sentimental for an accent. I think library DVD collections still have many of these films, but they're only used by a small (possibly ageing?) selection of the population.
