I think I read the original fic...that explains why it was taken off the net. Too bad it doesn't expand on the characters; that's the thing about fanfic, the characters are all there already, so there isn't the need to establish them like there is in original fic. I still sounds pretty good and it'd be nice to revisit the story.

This was pretty much the reason I bought both books in the first place. I honestly expected the author to use the original fan fiction as a foundation to build on but, for whatever reason, that didn't happen. Still, though, if you liked the original then you'll definitely like this; it just lost something in the translation for me.
One of the things I've done almost from the beginning is either write the secondary characters who don't have much of a back story, and so I can go wild with them, or else I flat out add original characters and just put them in the fandom's universe.
The thing that makes fanfic so easy is you're given the characters. If a writer is going to claim these characters for his/her own, then it behooves him/her to make an effort and expand them. Just take the time.
And I'm repeating myself again, aren't I? ::sigh::
Nothing wrong with reiterating a very good point. ;)

Exactly. It might be unfair of me to say, especially since I've never published anything myself, but it seems like a lot of fan fiction authors who turn their works into originals think that because they already have a ready-made audience that they don't have to change anything because the fans already know the characters. This isn't true of all of them - I've seen some really superb novels come out of fan fic - but there are some books out right now that just baffle me for their popularity because, as an original work, they don't...well, they don't work.
But that's just from a reader's standpoint. From a writer's...well, it makes me want to trot out all my old fics and see what I can do with them. lol

Give it a shot! A writer on my flist did the most amazing Live Free of Die Hard fic with a doomsday scenario. Yes, vampires and zombies are being done to death, but as I said, this was amazing. And it wouldn't have taken much to make it original. Unfortunately, at this time she isn't interested in doing that. :-(
But I hope you'll look into reworking something of your own!
