I went to see my high school's production of Rent tonight. For the most part it was lovely. There were some issues with Mimi's mic at first and some wrong notes hit but I still loved it. I've heard of the school version of Rent which eliminates the sex scene and as you observed, altered some lyrics.
I agree though, even watered down, its a little fairly mature for even the high school crowd. Ah well.
