Thoughts, Part II: Faith

Jan 29, 2006 00:03

This is something that has been on my mind to a great degree lately, and I have been reluctant to voice it due to the response that it may create, and I would be very VERY wary of discussing it with my father. Fortunately for me, he does not read my blog on MySpace or LiveJournal ( Read more... )

I've been thinking about this stuff as well lately. I also grew up in the church, in fact it's my parent's pursuit of the church that heavily influenced the deep depression I sat in throughout the majority of high school. Actually, I know it troubled my older sister significantly as well. Personally, what's happened for me is a divorce of my life from religion, but not from Christianity.
I am a very skeptical Christian though and probably also a theological evolutionist.

It means I've taken up drugs and become a skinhead.

Seriously though, skeptical Christian in that I am very skeptical of would be referred to as the "Christian Religion". I don't doubt there's a God and I don't doubt there was his son Jesus, but I have doubts about what has since become known as "Christianity". More in the sense that what happens today in the church is, in cases, drastically different than what Jesus and Paul taught.

As per theological evolutionist, I'm not sure if I believe in 7 literal days of creation.

What you've started listening to pop music!? No no, I'm listening...

I didn't know if you meant theological evolutionist as in what you described or you meant that your theology or theology in general has evolved and I couldn't figure out what you meant by that or how that was really bad or out of the ordinary.

Here is an observation, you have this "fear" of leaving your Christian roots of deciding not to believe (which is also another interesting point, the fact that your belief is your choice). Other than "conditioning", what is it that your faith has fulfilled in your life that you fear losing? Or what hole is Christianity filling in your life? This can have a very "Church/Christian" answer, or a very secular, however you want to take it ( ... )

Well, I honestly don't feel like my faith has done much for me personally, but what I do have is connections with some really great people. For that reason, if nothing else, I will stay in the church. Also, although I don't really feel convinced that my faith is correct, I do not really have any good reason to leave it.

Would you be willing to be convinced?

I propose this, if anyone has any other ideas I am so open to it. I will start a new thread on my journal for the sole purpose that if anyone has any questions or concerns about their faith they can post a message (even anonomously). I will do everything in my power to answer literally any question (yes, actually answering questions. I know, big shock to have actual answers come from me). I know I can't answer every question there is, there is a little mystery to life, but maybe I can address the concerns.

Does this sound agreeable?

Yeah, that would be fine with me.
