My first time posting a challenge for this community, but how could I not after the mods so graciously took my input into consideration? Here is a mini song-fic that contains lyrics from Love Story by Taylor Swift. Hope you enjoy it!
We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes
And the flashback starts
I'm standing there
On a balcony in summer air
Usagi gazed out at the night sky. Her initial giddiness at having found a way into Princess Dia's ball when neither Rei or even Ami had figured out how had long since worn off. Even the soft music and beautiful gowns inside no longer held an interest to her. Instead, an intense loneliness gripped her heart, a nostalgia unlike any she had ever felt before. She closed her eyes and rested her forehead on her gloved fists as a crystal tears peeked out from behind her eyelashes.
What is this feeling? Why was she feeling so lost? All of this, the dancing, the music, even the starry sky (though she felt their was something distinctly different about that) felt so familiar to her, but she knew that could not be. She had never been to a dance as extravagant as this one. Her closest experience to such a dance was the school dance her and Naru had attended together, and that had been all booming noises and flashing lights in the school gymnasium, nothing like the elegance this ball provided.
So why? Why did this all feel so familiar.
See the lights
See the party, the ball gowns
I see you make your way through the crowd
And say hello, little did I know
Suddenly, Usagi had the distinct impression that she was being watched. She spun around, tears still filled her eyes, though she could not understand why, and made them red. For a moment, she thought it must be her imagination playing games with her, she must be paranoid, thinking that the Negaverse was at the party as well in hopes of finding the crystal (though she had not thought of that possibility since the excitement of being at the ball had overwhelmed her caution), but then she saw him, his white mask glowing under the soft lights.
Her breath caught as Tuxedo Kamen (who else could it be but him?) made his way through the crowd and out to her balcony. His eyes never left hers and she felt her lips part in surprise. Tuxedo Kamen...was here? And that hole in her chest that a moment ago she could not comprehend suddenly disappeared.
"Hello," he said, his deep, velvety voice exactly as she remembered it. He reached out a hand, "Will you dance with me, princess?"
Unable to speak as the blood rushed to her cheeks, Usagi mutely nodded and accepted his hand and as soon as he did she felt herself spiralling away. Away from the ball, away from Tokyo, away from Earth and into the stars.
That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet
And I was crying on the staircase
Begging you please don't go, and I said
It had been a night just like this one. How could she have forgotten?
He had snuck into her garden, throwing pebbles at her window to catch her attention and then told her that he would be at the ball that night be right before being chased away by the palace guards. She had hardly believed that he would make it until she saw him for her own eyes in that mask...the same mask he wore now.
How she had cried minutes later when he told her he would be going to war. He was going off to certain death to protect her. She had begged and pleaded with him, told him they could run, somewhere Beryl and her minions would never find them, but it was no use. He had left her...and they had both died. She gasped at the realisation, looking up into the masked face, his name on her lips. Not whatever name he wore now, but his true name, Endymion, Prince of Earth as she had been the Princess of the Moon, Serenity.
Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story baby just say yes
Luna jumped on her shoulder and Usagi fell away from Tuxedo Kamen's arms, her mind spinning back to Earth. A dazed look fell on her face and she felt like she had just been woken from a dream, a wonderfully, horrible dream that disappeared with the first rays of sunshine.
"Huh? Luna?"
Luna dug her nails into Usagi's shoulder in her anxiety, "Princess Dia has the crystal! She's possessed by the Negaverse! Quickly!"
Usagi had no choice but to follow the moon cat. She looked back at Tuxedo Kamen one last time, feeling as if she were forgetting something important, something that lingered on the edges of her mind.
"Thank you for the dance," she curtsied hurriedly and almost fell over as she raced after the impatient Luna.
Mamoru watched the mysteriously familiar girl go and felt a great emptiness in his heart that had been momentarily filled as they had danced. There was something so familiar about her... Shaking his head he followed, feeling there was something important connected with the girl. Something that he should never have forgotten.
