The worst gig I've ever seen.

To the 100 Club last night for "the first Television Personalities headline show since 1997" (even though they played one in 2004). That return to the stage last year was pretty bad; actually, I had to leave the room it was such an unlistenable mess. But hey! that one actually *was* their first show for eight years, and Dan Treacy's first public ( Read more... )

Christ, I nearly turned up for this gig but was Just Too Tired. I feel bad, as they were using my bass amp and I'm now in some way responsible. The new TVPs album (it's finished!) is actually Bluddy Grate, there's some wonderful wonderful stuff on it. Will try & get you a copy; I want one for myself too :) Tap's told me that Dan can be a bit of a handful though, he'll play a song and then FORGET THAT HE JUST PLAYED IT, etc... a bit of a troubled mind there but a lovely bloke apparently.

I'm sure the record *is* good; Dan was always a great songwriter, the problem always lay in his ability to shoot himself in the foot. Tap was wondering around before the show carrying a guitar; I was half-expecting him to be onstage with Dan playing his guitar parts.

great god it was awful!
but really I can't really imagine dan taking a backseat with the TVPs, I think he thought he was really funny and entertaining.

I saw them a couple of times in the early 90s, and hated it even then. Although Jowe Head was always magnificent value.

Jowe was coerced onstage last night for a couple of numbers. He looked heroically (heroin-ically?) thin, but, as you say, is quite a showman.
Vic Godard (also in the audience) was invited up to, but politely declined. Or maybe he had already left...

unlistenable mess

not entirely the sound engineer's fault, hopefully... ;-)

No, I think it was probably the fault of that fella standing next to you with his hands across the desk stopping you touching any of the faders...

see the bloke on last week's mastermind made the mistake of doing "manchester music 1976-1991", when clearly he should have done "manchester music 1976-1986" as he got virtually none of the baggy questions right, although anyone who knows the name of northside's guitarist (except him and his mum) really shouldn't be allowed out...
