Character name: Vivi Orunitia
Fandom: Final Fantasy IX
Point in canon taken from: After defeating Trance Kuja, before the FMV ending
Appearance: Vivi has the appearance of a typical Final Fantasy Black Mage, but with a more detailed look. He wears a large (for a person his size anyway, standing between 3-4 feet) blue jacket with white sleeves pulled over, slightly exposing his brown leather gloves. He wears baggy teal and white striped pants and normal brown colored boots that he often trips over. To top it off, he dons a huge hat that appears to be too big for him (in fact, it’s bigger than him if you stretch it out), with half of the hat hanging back. Under all that clothing, you can only see a black shadow with large eyes. Vivi uses various staffs when he battles that allows him to cast various powerful Black Magic spells. Vivi’s appearance changes when he is in Trance Mode, in which his whole body radiates a bright blue/silver and his hat actually stands up all the way.
Personality: Early in the game, Vivi tends to be gullible and somewhat of a coward, afraid of using his magic such as when Princess Garnet aka Dagger was in danger. He felt guilty, but thankfully, he, Zidane, and Steiner managed to rescue Princess Garnet from the plant monster that captured her. After the incident with the Black Mages, Vivi starts questioning his own existence. But after traveling with Zidane, Vivi’s changed. Although still a little quirky, he becomes braver and no longer afraid to speak up for himself. On a cute note, Vivi is afraid of heights but he loves windmills.
History: Vivi was created by Kuja as a prototype before the other Black Mages were created, hence why he appears to be slightly different from them. Somehow, Vivi manages to escape by falling out of the cargo ship that held the other Black Mages and was fished out of the Mist Ocean by Quan, a Qu (a race that lives to discover and eat new foods). Quan raised Vivi so the Black Mage would grow big enough to eat. Although Vivi never knew about that and lived a happy life with Quan (whom he referred to as his grandpa) in Quan’s Dwelling. After Quan died, Vivi was left alone. Not too long before the start of the game, Vivi goes to Treno, a town that was near Quan’s Dwelling, to get some help and eventually gets a ride on an airship to Alexandria.
Vivi gets a ticket to see a play called I Want to Be Your Canary performed by the Tantalus Theater Troupe. He becomes sad after finding out that his ticket was a fake but runs into a street-smart rat named Puck, who helps Vivi sneak into the show (and calling him “slave” along the way). Near the conclusion of the play, Vivi gets caught by the guards and eventually finds himself dragged along with Garnet, Steiner, and the Tantalus Troupe. When the Tantalus Airship crashes in the Evil Forest, Zidane tries to get Vivi to help him and Steiner look for Princess Garnet. Vivi is reluctant to use his powers, as he is afraid of them, but Steiner manages to convince him.
When the group reaches the village of Dali, Vivi’s love for windmills is shown when you see him gazing at the windmills on top of the homes there. He gets captured by the townspeople and is brought to a Black Mage production plant hidden underground. Zidane and Garnet rescue Vivi and the trio finds out that the Dali villagers create the Black Mage drones as soldiers for Alexandria.
When the party boards the cargo ship, Vivi tries to talk to the Black Mages there but gets no response. To make matters worse, the cargo ship gets attacked by the powerful Black Waltz No. 3, killing all the Black Mages who attempted to protect Vivi (it’s a very sad and tear worthy scene, by the way). This is the first time you see Vivi showing anger, as well as going into his Trance Mode. Thanks to that and the help of Zidane and Steiner, they manage to defeat Black Waltz No. 3. That didn’t make things better for Vivi though. This is the first time Vivi begins to question his true identity and his whole existence.
The party arrives to the Black Mage Village, where many Black Mages who have “awakened” live, they first greet Vivi with slight suspicion since he is traveling with humans. When Vivi visits the cemetery, he learns from Black Mage No. 288 (called Mr. 288) that all Black Mages “stop” eventually. Mr. 288 explains to Vivi that it means death and most of the Black Mages don’t live past a year. But because Vivi is a prototype, he is given a longer life span (he is nine years old). Vivi becomes distressed, but manages to come to terms with his existence later in the game.
