Hmm, that or CS gas and baton rounds - the other options for dealing with violent and unruly crowds the world over. Perhaps even tanks and water cannons because no-one ever gets harmed by a water cannon [that last with a lot of tongue in cheek].
I'm probably the wrong person to comment in that some of the twonks with incendiary devices ended up chucking them at the building I was in. All in all after the Oxford Circus holding of x years ago you have to be remarkably dim not to realise the current policy is Kettling.
In addition until RBS got staved in on the Wednesday people were allowed to leave via King Wiliam Street and Queen Victoria Street. After RBS and the use of incendiary devices and impromptu and not that impromptu missiles got thrown oddly enough free movement was restricted. Simple answer don't associate with twonks and you don't get Kettled.
the more i read about what went on that day, the less of a problem i have with anything the police did and actually the crowds were pretty well behaved too. there were twonks, but there were a lot of reasonably sensible people too
