Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Wow. I haven't posted here for a long time. but here's a use for it; Star Wars spoiler post, so I can direct friends here if they want to see what I thought! Seriously, if you haven't seen it, go in cold and don't click the link below.
It is a great movie, and obviously designed to be a fan pleaser, and also obviously designed to set up the rest of the trilogy, no stand alone finish here.
Fan Pleaser - a bit too much? JJ is obviously a Star Wars fanboy, and possibly tipped over the edge of homage in this one, with the plot lifted so much from the original. But it does still work, and it is done with love.
What a great script. Good grief that highlights how bad the dialogue was in the prequels. Nothing wooden or stilted and all really believable.
Daisy & John are incredible, what a fantastic pair of actors to take the franchise forward. Wonderful relationship building loved the frustration and elation with each other. Really felt for Finn at the beginning, even under all that armour I could feel his stress and distaste as his conditioning was breaking.
Lets not leave out Adam Driver, Kylo Ren was a wonderfully unhinged character, seduced by the Dark Side, but still longing for the light, dealing with a complete lack of anger management and more daddy issues than Luke and Leia every had. Looking forward to seeing more of him.
Would have loved more of Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma, however I understand that she's on board for the whole series, and I expect we'll see more of her in the next film.
The death - I'd love to say it surprised me, but I'd been kind of expecting it. Knowing that they've drawn on the best of the EU, I was expecting the parantage revalation and the moment you expect that there's only one obvious conclusion for where you're going to go with it.
Solo, Leia, Chewie, Luke & the Droids - Han puts it best when he says "Chewie, we're home." It feels like they've all come home and are pleased to be there, with the old friends and to pass the leading character torches on to the new generation.
Do I seriously have to wait until 2017 now???
