... I hate writing resumes. I hate trying to build a new narrative for my life every time I see a new position for which I might be qualified. I hate trying to strike a balance between selling myself and overselling myself. I hate realizing that the primary goal of HR departments everywhere is to weed out people just like me as risky. My company is hiring. In fact, *I* am hiring. It'd be a helluva commute, though.

Yeah, we've moved quite a bit closer, but not really commuting distance.

Part of the problem we are encountering--well, Greg, not me personally--is that he has a terrific skill set. But his skills are very specialized, and even though he has considerable computer literacy, 20 years of working in broadcasting doesn't LOOK like it would translate well to anything else. This, despite the fact that it basically involves sales skills, computer skills, editing and writing skills..people look at it and think he flipped a switch on a microphone.

He's considering going to school for broadcasting engineering training. Lord knows he did his share of THAT work too. (Bitter? Me? Naaah.)

Whereas I only have 6 years of experience at something with a job that looks like it has no applicable skillset, and know just about enough about a billion things to become a skilled professional in short order... but not enough about any one thing to be considered one already. And while I keep thinking about certifications or training, there's nothing I feel drawn to, and nothing I know of that I'll have a definite market for if I spent the money we no longer have on it, so it might be yet another waste.

Oh, yes, exactly. I have NEVER had any great desire to enter any given career. So, despite the fact that I am going to be stuck working at a big toy store (I am not allowed to mention their name in blogs!), I am going to put serious effort into really getting something going with etsy. Turns out making and selling custom garb appears to be the dream job I could never find.

*nod* If I thought I could earn a steady decent living making jewelry, that would be excellent. If nothing else, it's a job where my mind is free while my hands are busy - I can be doing other things while, e.g., knitting wire, or crocheting. But I also couldn't live on an ebb-and-tide sort of budget - I do need at least some degree of "I will definitely earn this much money by this time of year."
