I blame my parents

I ache. Not much, and at least I'm still young enough that it holds off until I stop moving, but it's there.

As ragnvaeig mentioned, we are getting ridiculous amounts of snow piled on top of the ridiculous amount of snow our apartment complex failed to finish dealing with from the weekend. Seriously, there's over a meter of total accumulation out there by ( Read more... )

Yer a good guy, and your parents deserve a hug for raising you as such. Even if it hurts.

Big man's burden doesn't help either. But it's not my fault I'm the biggest and the strongest - I don't even exercise!

I don't think Big Man's Burden would be an issue if you weren't also a gentleman.

I find that big/strong guys tend to divide into two camps - there's guys who're big and callous, and don't worry about throwing their weight around, then there's guys who grew up being careful and get that Spiderman complex. You seldom see anyone in the middle.

Alive is good, even if you're achy as all hell.

It's actually not that bad. I just kvetch about minor inconveniences for some reason. If I've got a twinge on my bicep, kvetch kvetch kvetch. If a 2ft wide, 10 foot long timber gets slammed into my shin like a battering ram? Well, finish getting it into position, and explain why I'm limping later.

...yeah, that sounds oddly familiar. It's when I'm NOT bitching about something that it's probably a big deal...

(I suspect I vent the little things so that I can cope with the big things stoically)

I think for me it's the difference between venting and letting it get in the way. If I shovel for five plus hours and my shoulders are sore... Well, I'm done, I can kvetch about it. If we're in the middle of a hard heavy job like laying out timbers, and I'm not INCAPACITATED, complaining would just draw attention and slow things down. I'm a big fan of getting things done quickly and paying for it a bit later, rather than drawing them out.

It's the same reason I ask people not to help me if a job is just at the limit of what I can manage alone. If I CAN do it myself, it'll get done at my pace and I don't have to worry about anyone else hurting themselves and/or screwing up at a dicey moment. If I get "help", I usually end up putting in three-quarters of the physical work, the job takes twice as long, and I'm worrying the whole time about coordination.

"For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."

Big, strong dude. Physical task. It's not like I would have thought to volunteer for it without stimulus, and I don't know that I would necessarily have helped a neighbor I didn't know as well...

Mainly, I pitch in with heavy lifting tasks because I know they're much harder for people who aren't six-four with carrying frames, and the gratitude/renown is all out of proportion to how much effort it feels like to me. ;)

Yeah and while you all are being pummelled with snow, it seems that my house, (the one in Upstate NY where there is pretty much ALWAYS a new accumulation of snow, got nada with this storm.

Oh there are about 5 or six inches of old snow on the ground, there's pretty much always at least that much hanging out up here from Beginning of November through until late April. I did have to shovel for about 10 minutes to clear the 125 feet or so of sidewalk from the driveway to my front door at 4 this morning. But other than that...bupkis.

I'd gladly trade you a meter or so of what we've gotten so far. These storms crawling up out of the south have apparently set the world on its ear.

At the end of our driveway, up near the garage, there are mounds of snow that are taller than I am. Granted, that's not that much, but it amuses me. In front of the windowbox is a lovely deep mound, and the mailbox has succumbed to the weight of the snow on top of it. It's dead, Jim.

The sides of the walk out of our apartment have mounds of snow taller than I, which totally is much. The drifts are easily up to my chest. It's insane out here, I tells ya.
