I wasn't even aware Kotex was selling something new. I just assumed they were repackaging and remarketing. And most commercials nowadays don't seem to tell you a damn thing about what they're supposedly selling - just trying to get the name in your head seems to be the sole goal these days.
It still seems a bit more logical than their weird "boy wakes up with a vagina" marketing thing.
Well, unless you're a new brand/product, marketing is increasingly aimed at people too lazy to do any form of product research. It's way too easy nowadays to search for information about and reviews of products, so the classic idea of "tell people what you offer" doesn't hold up like it used to. So now it's "Make sure you have brand recognition so people who don't think will assume you're a good product."
And, they did. They just did it online, through a blog and some YouTube videos, IIRC. There's a link at the bottom of the page I linked to, discussing the campaign, and the many Issues coming from the idea.
Aren't those things some sort of haz-mat spill absorbers, used to absorb blue pollutants? From the few ads I've seen that appears to be their function. And I've seen claims from military people that they are quite good for plugging bullet holes, keeping the red stuff on the inside.
As an aside, I would love to see a tampon ad that just talks about this latter usage, with stereotypical marines plugging their favourite brand, perhaps even with clips of the tampons being used for this. They could even product place them in various combatty computer games...
The one ad about cliches does at least include that whole "blue liquid" thing...
See, nosebleeds I'd heard of, and that could be funny... not so much the bullet holes, though that would be interesting. I'm pretty sure it's not quite Quick-Clot though.
