Get one of those big-barrel curling irons. I think mine is ummmm 1 3/4 inches. Make sure it's the kind that can get really hot or has a bunch of heat settings depending on your hair type so the curl stays in better. The Golden Heat ones are really good but they're kind of expensive. I have a Revlon ceramic one and it's OK for starters.
Then just clamp the iron at the top of your head near your roots (not too tightly) and slide down to the ends (the reason you should start up top is so you don't get a kink midway through) and turn the iron around once or twice to where your hair's wrapped all the way around and hold it for...however long it takes to the curl to hold (experiment).
Make sure that when you take it out, you just open the clamp gently and kind of wiggle slightly and let the hair fall out; don't unwrap it all the way or pull too hard or else the curl will come out.
