Information Packet: THE GODS OF ASGARD.

Dec 19, 2011 22:29

This is a source for information on the gods of Asgard. Any and all information here has been collected by Sam Winchester. Feel free to offer suggestions and input as to any new information that you've discovered by sending me a text file of whatever you want to be added. This will be updated on a need-to-know basis with whatever information we've discovered for however long we're kept here.

In the event that I leave the city, this guide will be left in the hands of anyone who feels able to keep it updated and accurate. I will leave instructions to access it with people I trust -- AKA, this isn't Wikipedia, and it's not open-edit. Sorry, guys. I don't feel like going through and editing out nonsense.

GENERAL INFORMATION

WHAT IS ASGARD?

There are a lot of myths regarding the city of Asgard, but most of them correlate directly to a mystical city in the ancient Norse system of belief. It is the capital city of the Norse gods, run by the god Odin, and his wife, Frigg. The old myths of Asgard correlate with how the city is set up, but a lot of pieces are missing. For example, the buildings in the city look like they're from a much more modernized European setting, instead of an ancient Norse feel. Whether or not this was put into place to make us feel more at "home" is up to anyone's guess, but in Norse myth, the city of Asgard is surrounded by a large wall (though it is incomplete in most myths), and it is populated by many of the larger players of the Norse pantheon, many of which are in the city that we're living in.

WHERE DO THESE GODS COME FROM?

Note: If you want to know about a specific god, please check the section of the information packet labeled 'Gods of Asgard'. This section is dedicated to a general overview of the Nordic pantheon.

The gods located within the city are from a strain of mythology known as 'Nordic'. It was mostly popular in the Middle Ages (specifically, the early Middle Ages, from about the fifth century to the year 1,000 AD), before the Christianization of Scandanavia, though these stories weren't only told in the Scandanavian part of the world -- they stretched from Norway to Germany, before Christianity became the hit new religion of the modern era.

It's a pagan belief system, with a large number of gods and goddesses suited to ensuring the running of the world and the protection of both their earthen and heavenly realm. In the myths, there are Nine Worlds, each suited for a specific population. The nine worlds are Asgard, Vanaheim, Alfheim, Jötunheimr, Nidavellir, Muspelheim, Niflhel, and Hel. All of these worlds are connected by something called the Yggdrasil, the world tree, and Asgard is situated at the very top.

There are numerous supernatural beings present within Nordic mythology, the most popular and well-read about being the gods and goddesses themselves, though there is also Fenrir, the gigantic wolf, and Jormungard, the sea serpent coiled around Midgard. As of now, there hare been no such sightings of other supernatural beings being present in the city of Asgard, save for the faceless maids and other native residents, so this section will not be expanded upon without further information.

THE GODS OF ASGARD

***

As of this publication, there are nine (9) gods present within the city that are known about by the public. This is, by all means, no indication of how many gods/goddesses are actually here. We only know how many there are based off of the houses they put us in. As more gods/goddesses are discovered, if there are any, this section will be updated.

ODIN

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: A major god in the Nordic pantheon, Odin is the god most closely correlated with wisdom, magic, war, battle, and victory. He has a wife by the name of Frigg and many sons, the most famous of which is Thor. He resides within Asgard itself, as its leader, and is often referred to as the 'head' god of the Norse pantheon, though most texts don't actually refer to him as any such being. He is proud, sometimes ruthless, and dangerously clever.

POWERS: Fire/Ice Magic of varying levels of expertise, controlled with your bare hands, without any additional tools or rituals to summon it.

HEIMDALL

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: The god that possesses the horn Gjallahorn. He's often depicted with a golden-maned horse. One of the sons of the Nine Months. He watches for the coming of Ragnorak -- the coming of the death of the gods. This is, obviously, a very important position, and it is only entrusted to Heimdall himself. He rarely leaves his position from his throne, keeping a constant watch on the horizon. Most often associated with loyalty and duty, due to his constant job of protecting the gates of the Nordic Heaven. His loyalty to the pantheon is absolute.

POWERS: The ability to grant others your power or the ability to take on someone else's damage onto your own person.

THOR

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: The God most closely associated with power and thunder. He wields a massive hammer that causes thunder and lightning to strike whenever he swings it. Associated with strength and violence -- the strongest warrior of the Nordic pantheon. You don't want to run into him in an alley on your way home at night, that's for certain, because he will most definitely kick your ass to the curb.

POWERS: Superior strength or superior speed.

LOKI

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Major asshole who doesn't give a damn about anything but his own reflection. Also has a penchant for creating ridiculously complicated worlds and trapping people in them for his own sick entertainment. It stopped being funny four years ago, asshole. Flighty, unpredictable, self-motivated for his own goals and interests. The mythology on Loki varies drastically depending on what text you read, but most portraits painted of him depict him as something of a prankster who doesn't particularly give a damn about much in life save for his own kicks.

POWERS: Telepathy and telekinesis. Strength of both has not yet been determined.

SIGYN

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: The wife of Loki allegedly. The goddess of the hearth and home -- a kind and compassionate soul, driven by the will to help people. It should be noted that some myths of Sigyn differ from this view, but the most trusted pieces of literature indicate that she is nothing but a selfless kind soul who wishes to be kind to everyone she meets.

POWER: The power of healing has been reported, but little else has been confirmed. Information required.

BALDR

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: In one of the most famous Nordic pieces of poetry written, Baldr is said to have the greatest ship that has ever sailed -- and he was quite proud of it, too. The god of light and purity, Baldr is an essential piece in the Nordic pantheon. He represents the part of the spectrum that keeps the world turning.

POWER: Flight and regeneration. Again, information on these is scarce, so anyone who has these powers, please leave information on them.

FREYA

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: The goddess of love, fertility, beauty, and everything relating to it. She rules over her own realm of the afterlife, where she accepts half of those who have died in battle. (The other half go to Odin's Valhalla.)  For being the goddess of love, she doesn't have very much luck in it -- her husband is constantly absent and she cries fabled tears of red/gold for him until he returns to her. She possesses a cloak made out of feathers that she frequently lends to other deities in order to bless them in the field of love.

POWERS: Various levels of attraction and charm, along with the ability to transfer your power to someone else.

FREYR

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Freyr is the brother of the goddess Freya. He is also associated with love and fertility, though he is also associated with farming and weather. The most famous story associated with Freyr involves the marriage of a mortal, in which he has to give up one of his most powerful weapons to be with her. Despite this, he still manages to defeat a legendary beast. He is powerful, reliant on his strength, and is not quite so sweet as his sister.

POWERS: Powers seem to revolve around creativity. I haven't seen any of them in action yet, but I've heard stories of people who have powers revolving around art and music. More information would be appreciated.

HEL

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: The goddess of the underworld. She was appointed by the god Odin in order to guard over the afterlife, to give it some semblance of order, and to keep the balance intact. She's written as to having something of a downcast appearance, with her flesh half pale and half blackened. She's also written as playing a part in the resurrection of the god Baldr. Whether or not they have any connection in Asgard isn't known.

POWERS: Controlling shadows and low level possession have been rumored, but not confirmed. Information needed.
