Hey, don't worry about being to heavy.. It still doesn't say we are mutual friends.. just thought I would let you know. I really like the pictures below in the other journals.
This is a bit random, but I saw your post on various travel comms about South Africa and came here to check out your journal. You used to live in Chester? I'm from Chester and currently living there while I get a Life (tm) and so I thought I'd say hi and offer to answer questions on SA and Swaziland and Moz to the best of my ability. I did volunteer work in SA for 8 months back in 2003 and managed to get, briefly, to both Swaziland and Moz. I'm not sure how much help I'll be since a) 2003 is a while ago now, and b) I was only in Swazi for a week and Moz for 2 and most of the latter was spent sick with strep throat. (Note: don't get that while you are there - it sucks with everyone scaring you by diagnosing malaria. Heh.)
But I'll try. SA is wonderful, but very complex. Moz is one of those up and coming destinations (I'd hate to think how it's changed since I was there) so see it while you can!
I am still living in Chester (uni) :) I think you can probably be more helpful than you think with Swaziland and Mozambique as we will have less time in each country than you did (about five weeks in total). Apart from being ill, what did you do/where did you go? I haven't even bought a guide book yet (damn, they are expensive!) so any information at all is very welcome! Did you get to see much of SA while you were volunteering?
Ah, well in that case, I could probably meet you somewhere and lend you my old Moz guidebook. It's out of date but things like beaches don't move, so it'll do for you to plan an itinerary of sorts. Yeah, expensive.
I only got as far as Inhambane and Tofo. Maputo is (was?) nice, though my experience was a little skewed for having been in SA for so long. I was base just outside of Jo'burg so the tension is pretty apparent. Compared to that Moz was BLISS! With less than two weeks, I wouldn't attempt to be too ambitious for Moz (or even SA for that matter) since the infrastructure isn't that great. Tofo has a relaxed air and if that's changed much then going further north to Vilanculos is an option, though you might be pushed for time.
SA is a whole lot bigger than you think and the public transport options are nothing like Asia (I assume that's where you've been before) since the security is a real issue. I've been to Nairobi and beforehand I heard things that suggested it was crime ridden. It was absolutely fine. But I would not fuck
