fanfic100 prompt. 056. Breakfast
But he doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t know how to explain it. He doesn’t even know where to start.
There’s no real reason Nate picks this particular truck stop for breakfast. It just happened to be the easiest turn off the highway. It’s not like he has any favourite spots this far north. Hell, the last time he was in Seattle, he was seven, on a family vacation and...
He almost puts the keys of the truck back in the ignition and keeps driving. But Brandon’s already halfway out of the truck and Nate really wouldn’t mind a cup of coffee.
They sit in the diner and don’t say much. Or rather, he doesn’t say much. Brandon keeps talking, trying to have some sort of conversation with him. And he feels guilty, he really does, but he’s just so numb, so detached. Like he’s a spectator in his own life.
He’s felt like this since the funeral.
And Brandon’s going on about what there might be to do in Seattle because he just doesn’t get it. He doesn’t get that this trip isn’t about going somewhere to do something. It’s about getting away. It’s about leaving those memories behind. Because he doesn’t know how else to deal with this.
But he doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t know how to explain it. He doesn’t even know where to start.
The waitress refills his coffee mug and brings them pancakes that Nate only half remembers ordering. It’s then that he finally looks up at Brandon, seeing the confusion and worry on his face.
And he wants to kiss him and make that look go away and tell him that everything’s going to be okay.
"Brandon?"
"Yeah?"
"How do you think the weather in Canada is this time of year?"
Except he can’t. Because he’s not sure if everything’s going to be okay ever again.
