Summary: He spent months dreaming of that first kiss.

He spent months dreaming of that first kiss. That first, tentative brush of lips before he decided to throw caution to the wind and just go for it.

After all, he had nothing to lose. Neither of them did.

It was supposed to be their last night together, but fate, it seemed, had other plans. And Jesse ended up staying until mid-April. But as it became clear that not only was Germany not going to win this war, but they would be invaded by the Red Army, Nate knew he had to get Jesse to leave.

For good.

And from then on, Nate he would spend nights dreaming of freedom and America. Not because he had any desire to leave, but because it made him feel like he was closer to Jesse. If only in his mind.

Soon, the years began to pass and they began to get used to the communists. Not because he particularly agreed with their methods and philosophies, but because they allowed him to keep his clinic open. And so he could continue to do what he could for those who needed him most.

Jesse had been one of those people once. Long ago now. And it wasn’t as if he meant too, but Nate found himself forgetting. Little things. The sound of his voice, the heat from his body, the cut of his hair.

He knew Jesse would never blame him. He would likely call him foolish for holding on to the memory for so long. He’d probably even moved on. Married that girlfriend of his and started a nice, all-American family.

Which is why, when the nurse tells him he has a visitor, he doesn’t think anything of it. People from the town come in all the time to talk with him. He tells her to send the person to his office, since he has paperwork to finish.

The knock on his door is timid. Nate doesn’t even look up. /“Sorry to bother you, Herr Doctor, but I wanted to pay you a visit.”/

The German is rusty, with the hint of a foreign accent. It’s enough to make Nate drop his pen and stare at the man in the doorway.

“Jesse.”
