I haven't watched it for a while, and we know it was just a mistake in writing, but although it's implied that Sam was only away for two, you could argue (a lawyer like Sammy could argue) Dean says he hasn't spoken to Sam for 2 years, or Sam hasn't called for 2 years (can't remember exactly which).
So, it is technically possible that Sam went to college and did call up to two years ago, or even just once, and that was two years ago. So, yes, Sam is 22 so he would have been at college four years and that matches the study schedule too.
