New Arkham game!…oh. It’s an origin story.

“As the title suggests, the game takes place years before both of the previous Arkham titles when a young, unrefined Batman encounters many supervillains for the first time.”

I read this and my heart sank. This is not the game I wanted. I wanted to see what happened after Arkham City. What does Batman do in a Jokerless Gotham? Does Harley manage to keep her gang and become a true threat? (And yes, Harley Quinn’s Revenge, but beyond that.) There are so many loose ends to be tied up. What about the Scarecrow’s coded messages, or the ship full of bugs? What about Gordon reminding Bats of that…other problem? What about that thug who was speculating about their future - “First Arkham Asylum, then Arkham City, what’s next - Big-Ass Arkham World?” I was so excited for that game, and that’s not the game I’m getting.

Aside from all of that, I don’t want to play young, unrefined Batman. I want to play as Batman, the meticulously trained man who can break your bones in twelve different ways in less than a minute.

Hey, even better, I want a chance to play as Batgirl, which I was really hoping might have been an option in the third game. Putting the game in that oh-so-popular “Brand-New-Batman” era rules out any contributions from any of the extended Bat-family or their legacies. So no Batgirl, no Nightwing, probably not even a Robin. Bummer. (Unless Batsy’s been around long enough to pick up a sidekick or two, but then, if he’d been around that long, why would he just now be meeting his villains?) Oh, and probably no Joker, too, unless they can either get Mark Hamill back or hire a sound-alike.

Oh well. I’m certainly going to buy Arkham: Origins, and I’m certainly going to give it a chance. Any Batman is better than no Batman, and there is every possibility that they can turn out something that can stand with Arkham Asylum/City in terms of awesomeness. (And maybe if this one does well, Big-Ass-Arkham-World will be the fourth game.)
