I'm designing traditional Noh (Japanese Medieval) costumes for the characters of the Quartet, because they challenge gender boundaries. In Noh theatre, women were traditionally played by men with elaborate masks and costumes. This should be interesting.

So, we'll probably get a house next year making up for previous sucky picks. (:

Not to be all Wesleyan on you, but having women be traditionally played by men does not challenge gender boundaries. In fact, it was the norm in the 16/17th centuries (look at all of Shakespeare's performances). Rather than challenging gender norms, it placed women on a lower social stratum than men and kept them out of the theatre.

Yes, that is the case for Noh theatre. "Because they challenge gender boundaries" was referring to the characters of Quartet who role play other characters of different genders. In the case of Quartet, gender norms were challenged because men roled played women in addition to the reverse. I am applying the traditional Noh theatre costume designs and portraying men with feminine masks as well as women with masculine masks to portray this challenge.
