Sweeney Todd was quite enjoyable...although a little too heavy on the Tim Burton for my tastes. Now I have a very strong urge to see it live. For those of you who have seen both- was the movie true enough to the musical? Burton seemed to take few liberties with the medium of film (tight screen shots, few changes of scene), but it's hard to judge ( Read more... )

At one point I laughed out loud - during the first murder when blood kept spurting out of the guy's neck for like three minutes straight. It was so overdone (and hell it was Borat) I couldn't help finding it more funny than anything else.

Tim Burton loves that shit - he does it on purpose. (Also, I haven't seen this yet, and I can't wait. I wasn't going to see it until I learned it was a Sondheim musical. Neat.)

Interesting, I always thought I enjoyed movies more because they can express more subtleties than staged performances - in set, lighting, camera anlges, acting through facial expressions (such as small eyebrow twitches) and the general intimacy I feel in a movie theater. I feel like I am a character when I watch movies, maybe because the people don't seem real to me. When I watch musicals I feel like I am watching people in a story, real live people, and I have a harder time connecting with them.
