i was flipping through this book i bought a couple of years ago. it's really racy. i didn't flip through it before buying it. the title 'memoirs of a beatnik,' considering it was coming from (written by) a female beat poet intruiged me because the only other beats whose writing i had read were males.

it's really racy-- in the sense that there are a lot of descriptive 'sex scenes' if you will. when i bought it from these guys who were travelling in the moblie "beat museum" who came to wsu a few years ago they told me that some of it is semi- autobiographical, and they think that the rest is exagerated or extra racy (since they thought that the publisher might've influenced diprima to add more raciness to the stories,) which is sad but might be true.
otherwise, it's just about her living through the 50's and being around the growing poet/beat scene in nyc in the mid to late 50's.
