change, it'll never happen
No pairing; from Jaejoong's mother's POV.
Fluff, G; 865 words.
Even when you can't see them, it's always been the mothers that have been secretly supporting them, encouraging them. This is the story of DBSK's mothers, and how they cope with their sons' fame.
Yunho's mother.

Disclaimer: I do not know Jaejoong's mother; everything here is just a figment of my imagination.

She sits at the kitchen table, chin in hand, and watches her new son of a few hours eat his food (He’s supposed to be eating it, she thinks wryly, not playing around with it.) She laughs at how he manages to paint half of his chin with baby food and leans over to gently wipe the mess off his face.

One of her daughters comes in while she’s lifting him into her arms, a bit surprised at how light he was. Can I hold him? her daughter asks softly, slightly holding out her arms.

A smile appears on her lips as Jaejoong pulls at his sister’s hair and pokes her cheeks, gurgling baby laughter at the same time.

She reaches over and taps him gently on the nose, Now, now; don’t do that, Jaejoong-ah. You wouldn’t want to make that a habit and ruin your chances of being a heartbreaker in the future, now do you?, and chuckles as he ignores her, choosing instead to lightly pat the cheeks he just poked and give a wide, toothless grin.

Taking the phone from her eldest daughter’s hand, she presses it to her ear, softly questioning, Jaejoong-ah?, and relaxes as she hears his reply.

They talk for a while, and the entire time, she worries at his hoarse voice, his constant coughs, and when she asks, the only thing she gets is a weak, forced laugh. What are you talking about, Mom? I’m perfectly healthy.

She chooses to indulge him in pretending that she’s convinced even though she’s heard from a relative living in Seoul that he’s barely surviving, living day to day wondering if he’ll be able to get through the next day. Letting him know that she knows of his suffering will only undermine his pride, and she understands, perfectly well, that it’s only his pride that’s pulling him to all of his jobs while he continues to train to become the perfect idol.

The last thing she says before hanging up is a simple whisper. Don’t give up, Jaejoong. Your future is waiting for you.

She crouches down in front of the wheelchair, hand reaching out to lightly press Jaejoong’s knee cap. How is it today, Jaejoong-ah? and glances up at him. She’s amused as he unconsciously bats her hand away from his knee, already wary of people touching his injury.

At his vague It’s sort of better…, she looks around the apartment and wonders out loud where the others are. Jaejoong says They’re all out buying stuff. I haven’t been able to cook lately, so I told them to stock up on food that doesn’t really need to be cooked.

She doesn’t respond for a moment, seeing how he doesn’t meet her eyes. I’m sure they’ll appreciate your cooking more after this, she comments lightly as she moves to stand up.

He looks at her, surprised into a laugh. They better, he says, or they’ll have to live on the stuff they buy for the rest of Dong Bang Shin Ki’s existence.

She grins and reaches out to tilt his head up to her, searching for the self-hatred she hopes isn’t there. She’s glad when she doesn’t find it, fingers absently caressing the shadows under his eyes. Rest better, Jaejoong-ah, she finally says. It wouldn’t do for you to fall sick just when your knee’s about to finish healing.

A quick, bright smile flashes across his face, and she starts to leave, satisfied at being able to cheer him up, hearing the door open with four men chattering behind her. She heads out to her car, but not before she half scolds the first person she sees to never leave Jaejoong alone again.

A letter comes for her in the mail; she opens it and is surprised at what the envelope holds. The picture inside is of Jaejoong and his costar in the upcoming movie he’s in (Her name was Han Hyojoo right?) smiling for the camera, happy and cheerful. She notices the hand on Hyojoo’s shoulder, and she chuckles, knowing full well that her son had always gotten along famously well with females, often to the point when other people would ask if they’re together-it seems as though this time is no exception.

She finds the note Jaejoong had written for her when she looks at the back of the picture; the ink is smudged and the handwriting is messy, yet she’s glad that he sounds so content.

‘How are you, Mom? This is my costar, Han Hyojoo. She’s such a bubbly and talkative girl, I almost can’t keep up! I hope you’ve been keeping up with my activities! I want you to see how I improve. By the way, I sent a different picture to Mother, so maybe you two can meet up in order to see the other picture and gush over how I’ve grown even more handsome? Just kidding~!’

She tucks the picture away into a photo album she’s been keeping over the years; it’s full of all the pictures he’s sent to her ever since he first left home. She’s keeping the pictures so that one day, she can show him just how much he’s matured.
