Jaejoong’s head lies on Yunho’s shoulder; they lie together in a field of grass, the stalks gently waving around them. A single bicycle rests on the grass next to Jaejoong, upside down, the wheel turning lazily. They relax there, basking in the warmth of the sun, waiting for it to set with its radiant shades of orange, red, and purple. It’s America, 1939.
Behind them, children run and laugh happily, enjoying the last moments of the day. They yell and shout, oblivious in their youth to the troubles around them.
The sun finally begins to set in all it glory, and Jaejoong feels his body be pulled more tightly against Yunho.
I’ve been drafted.
Jaejoong feels his eyes widen, his heart starting to beat unnaturally fast. What?
I got a letter today, telling me that the government drafted me into the army. Yunho’s gaze looks down at Jaejoong softly, filled with sadness.
No. It must be a mistake. Jaejoong’s hand unconsciously clenches Yunho’s shirt, the beauty of the day forgotten.
Yunho’s hand gently pries Jaejoong’s hand away, reaching over to cup Jaejoong’s cheek. It’s not a mistake. You should’ve known it was coming when we heard there was a second Great War.
But I didn’t think it would be you! I imagined it would be some neighbor, or some neighbor’s son… just not you! Jaejoong’s eyes fills with tears, some rolling onto his cheek, eventually disappearing under his chin.
Yunho leans over, tenderly kissing the tears away. It’ll be alright, Jaejoongie. I’ll come back for you, I promise.
Jaejoong looks at him, pleading with his eyes for his words to be true. He presses his face into Yunho’s chest, slowly soaking his shirt with warm tears.
It’s America, 1939.
