We, the student government here, had a similar issue in that we had a group organized to protest the naming of the tree decorated in the student center as the Holiday Tree. The focus of their protest was to have the tree name changed to only be the Christmas tree.
Is it all too ironic that the leader of such organized protest was Jewish? I ask you, find the logic in that one.
Needless to say, the protest was NOT successful due to the fact that we have two other functional and very active religious orders here on campus. The Student Government is FOR the students, BY the students, so any sort of specific naming of said event would be downright discriminatory.
They were ignored and eventually faded away.
