Some musings on popular culture, spanning several centuries and using ridiculously sweeping generalizations.

Lately I, and many other people, have been lamenting the state of popular entertainment.  Reality shows aside (because that would be a rant all in itself), most of the successful shows, movies, etc. are basically remakes of older ideas.  A ( Read more... )

Oh wow, would you have fit in well in my Beowulf class last semester. We spent basically the entire term talking about which is the original version and why do we think we can say that the ridiculous movies (purportedly) based on the poem are somehow inferior.

And yeah, this all came to a head for those of us NOT abroad in third year, when whiney, swoony Petrarch somehow found his way into HUMS 3000, Continental Lit AND Brit Lit, all within the same few lectures. We just about died.

Well, I would have loved to take that Beowulf class for the sole reason that it's Beowulf, but this works too! (Even though I have a problem not seeing as inferior a movie that has Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mother... I guess I'm too modern!)

And I remember when you all went on Petrarch Overload in third year. I was lucky that they'd changed it a bit by the time I got back. :P
